Catalan public TV (they like to call it "national") TV3 manipulates
a lot, but it's not easy to put your finger on the details. So I've made a little video. This is the Catalan version, but the English speaker can get the gist of it. It's about (national) symbols, and what it means "imposing" them. Apparently, the reporter thinks that the Spanish flag is both a symbol and an imposition (yeah, it is both, such is the law, which is similar to that of other countries), but the Catalan separatist flag doesn't seem to qualify for either.
I beg to differ.
And the subliminal message: the reporter put the Catalan national anthem under her piece. Way to go!
Maybe I do an English version tomorrow. Maybe not.
Update: Here it is. And I've extended it a bit.
Great stuff. Just one question: how do you know Segadors is "canned" music and not something they were playing right there when they hung the estelada?
ReplyDeleteThanks. Do play it several times, you'll see that the anthem is sung by a professional choir and that it's been recorded inside, not outside. You can hear the resonance.
DeleteWhat I mean is maybe they were playing a recording of the anthem through loudspeakers.
DeleteThought of it, but I think to perceive the point where the video editor goes from the on-scene applause to the anthem (and later back). Plus the trademark verse "endarrere aquesta gent" comes in just at the right moment, when the reporter pauses speaking and the girl starts climbing the ladder. It's not the first verse of the anthem, and no music can be heard before it.
DeleteGood timing of the demonstrators or good editing? I think it's the latter.
And checked again: the on-scene audio comes from the camera mike. It gets the applause pretty well, but when the anthem is on, none of the bystanders seem to be singing along. At any time.
DeleteEr.... that's not realistic.
Fair enough.
DeleteBtw, I had to up the volume a lot so that the Catalan anthem could be heard clearly. It's much lower in the original, which is why we could speak of subliminal trickery.
